Introduction of the Problem

Intro to the problemEven though many corporations use collaborative teams as an effective method for solving complex problems, lack of effective communication and collaboration has been identified as a common problem in the workplace.  Fostering relationships is one method to encourage a cooperative spirit among employees.  Corporations that can identify an effective method for improving relationships can ignite synergistic flow within their workforce.

Some have noted the potential of enterprise social networks, such as Yammer, to enhance collaboration within the workplace.  Collaboration tools such as these provide a medium for workers to connect informally and build a sense of community.  Yammer is a private social network with an interface that is similar to Facebook that allows individuals to share ideas and files.  This study explores the use of Yammer in a mid-sized company to understand if the use of an enterprise social network tool can enhance communication within a company.
